A frequent chart re-offender, with a few popular dubstep songs to his name, Timothy McKenzie has been making music since the age of 15, firstly in his brother’s studio, and now as a producer with some of the most high profile musicians in the UK and beyond. His sound isn’t exactly easily defined, blending a mixture of electro, drum and bass, dubstep, and R&B, and he’s quickly found fame and chart fortune bringing a dubstep themed sound to the mases. Fine, that’s all great and dandy for him, but who is this guy?

Labrinth is one of the hottest new prospects in world music, as well as influencing and creating some of the most popular dubstep songs this year. By creating a distinct style of hip hop-sounding dubstep-pounding R&B hits, Labrinth has begun to bring the beats of dubstep to the mainstream.

His debut album, Electronic Earth, was released on the 2nd of April, 2012. Positive reviews from critics abound, yadda yadda yadda. All you really need to know is that this album has the potential to (and already has) created some of the hottest new dubstep sounds this year. Second single Earthquake, featuring Tinie Tempah is the one everyone in the UK has heard played to death lately on the radio, but don’t forget to check out third single Last Time for a more synthpoppy electronica influenced sound.

While you’re around, you might as well check out a few remixes. Electronic Earth comes packaged with a series of remixes, including Noisia’s remix of Earthquake, a throbbing, epic heart-stomping of a remix, drawing upon the dubstep influences of Labrinth’s original track, and injecting a good measure of requiem for that classy sound.

Check out Labrinth’s Soundcloud account here, featuring a host of Earthquake remixes, along with the original sound. Definitely worth a listen if you’re looking for popular dubstep songs. Hell, why else you be here?

Okay boys and girls, what is dubstep? How the hell should I know; I just write about it. Ask Bassnectar, aka Lorin Ashton. He’s been making music, influenced from a number of genres since the nineties, bringing sounds from sources such as heavy metal, and grunge, to create a dubstep sound that you can audibly separate from the rest. Releasing his first material in 2000, Bassnectar’s dubstep has evolved throughout the past decade, resulting today in some of the dirtiest dubstep around.

Beginning in the breakbeat and mainstream electronic genres, Bassnectar’s first releases dabbled in the experimental, numbering an entire album “1 – 15″; guess the industry tools were a little pissed about that. His first forays into dubstep arguably came about with 2007′s release Underground Communication, as underground dubstep appreciation spread from the United Kingdom over to San Francisco.

Bassnectar also has a taste for collaboration, building up a rogue’s gallery of talented collaborators in his body of albums, all the way from Ellie Goulding, to Lupe Fiasco on his most recent release. You might find collaboration in semi-mainstream dubstep a sell out – you’d be wrong. Bassnectar has never sounded better, and input from additional artists can only serve to broaden the spectrum.

While Bassnectar ain’t exactly quite as popular as the mainstream (sell outs, to some of you purists) artists like Skrillex, he can still put on one hell of a show. His newest release is this year’s Vava Voom, released through his own label, and pulsing with pure intravenous dubstep energy. Like it? Go see the guy put on a show, he’s been touring for a decade now, and no dubstep artist gives a better performance live. The latest single from his aforementioned album Vava Voom is available for a quick listen here – give it a try, and open your ears to something other than Skrillex, jerk.

Londoners Saul Milton and Will Kennard, known in dubstep circles as Chase & Status recently announced a new album, due out sometime in 2012. Well about damned time. Their last offering, 2011′s No More Idols injected a decent load of happy-go-lovey energy deep into the vein of prudish mainstream dubstep. Now, I know they won’t exactly consent to releasing an album every week – But why the hell not!?

While we don’t know anything about the album as of yet, they have been confirmed as playing the UK’s Download festival 2012. UK readers, if you’re a real dubstep fan, get yourself down there, represent.

Meanwhile, here’s an offering from No More Idols, the lead single from that album, Let You Go, directly from the duo’s official youtube page.
